Cancer, also called malignancy, is a disease which affects the cells of the body which causes abnormal cell division in an uncontrolled way. There are many different types of cells in our body and there are many different types of cancers that arise from these cells. There are over 200 types of cancer.

Causes and types of Cancer

Anything that causes a normal body cell to multiply abnormally causes cancer. Mostly cancers occur due to gene changes of a person’s over lifetime and it rarely occurs due to inherited faulty genes. Cancers are divided into five groups according to the type of the cell they start from; they are:

  • Sacromas
  • Brain tumors
  • Leukaemias
  • Lymphomas
  • Carcinomas

Signs and Symptoms

Most of the cancers develop without any symptoms, few of the symptoms are specific but many of them frequently occur in individuals who have other conditions. Cancer may have symptoms like fever, fatigue and weight loss. This happens when the cancer cells use up much of the body’s energy supply.

The following are some of the common signs and symptoms of cancer:

  • Changes in skin such as a mole or a sore that does not heal.
  • Painful urination or blood in urine
  • Persistent thickening or lump anywhere on your body
  • Change in shape or size of the breast or change in texture of breast skin or nipple
  • Abdominal pain
  • A hard time swallowing
  • Unusual bleeding or discharge such as blood in stool or vaginal bleeding
  • Changes in bowel habits that lasts more than six weeks
  • Unexplained, significant weight loss over a couple of months
  • Coughing up blood
  • Symptoms that refuse to clear up, Eg: A sore that doesn’t heal or cough that lasts for more than three weeks

Screening and diagnosis of Cancer

Screening is the test for cancer before a person has any symptoms. Each type of cancer has its own screening tests.

If you are suspected to have cancer, the doctor may ask to do some blood tests and other laboratory tests such as biopsy and urine analysis, which helps in guiding the diagnosis.

Treatment for cancer

If you are diagnosed by cancer, you should be checked out by an oncologist for the cancer treatment. Depending up on the type of cancer an oncologist will determine which type of treatment has to be done.
